Summary
  • Collection depicts aspects of the personal life and career of poet and teaching artist Cheryl Boyce-Taylor from the 1990s to the 2010s, consisting of individual portraits of Boyce-Taylor; views of Boyce-Taylor during poetry readings; group portraits showing Boyce-Taylor with family, friends, colleagues and students; candid shots of family members; and a rap group publicity photograph. Depictions of Boyce-Taylor's personal and professional life before 1990 are very limited.
  • Of note are candid shots and group portraits related to the book release of Boyce-Taylor's poetry collection "Raw Air" (1997) and the one year anniversary of its release (1998); group portraits from the Calypso Muse Reading series (2001-2006); and group portraits of Boyce-Taylor with her son Malik Taylor, also known as Phife Dawg of the rap group A Tribe Called Quest. Also included is a candid shot of Boyce-Taylor with rap artist Common, and a view of a performance of the Boyce-Taylor Theatrical Company during the 1980s.

Biography (note)
  • Cheryl Boyce-Taylor, born in Arima, Trinidad in 1950, is a poet and visual and teaching artist. At age thirteen, she migrated to St. Albans, Queens, New York. In the early 1970s, she formed the Boyce-Taylor Theatrical Company and began performing her poetry. Boyce-Taylor has published several poetry monographs including: "As A Woman I Laugh and Cry...Poems", "Birthsounds, Rhythms and other Contractions", "Convincing the Body", and "Raw Air". Her work has been featured in magazines and journals such as Callaloo, in addition to her work with choreographer Ron K. Brown's Evidence Dance Company.
