Summary
  • Collection depicts aspects of the career of dancer, actor and playwright Djola Branner from the late 1980s to the early 2000s. Collection consists of studio portraits of Branner, some in costume, which may have been used for publicity purposes; candid shots of Branner; group portraits showing Branner with fellow actors and friends; views of Branner teaching dance classes; publicity photographs and views of rehearsals for a dance production; and a series of slides used in a theatrical production. Some images are only available as contact sheets and negatives. Depictions of Branner's personal life are very limited; his professional activities after the early 2000s are not depicted.
  • Of note are group portraits of Branner with fellow Pomo Afro Homos troupe members Marvin K. White, Brian Freeman and Eric Gupton (1993-1994); studio portraits of Branner as Ghede from the dance production "Flesh & Spirit" (taken in 1989) and from the production "Mighty Real: a Tribute to Sylvester" (1999); publicity photographs from "Flesh & Spirit" that are mounted to scrapbook pages with an article about the production from the San Francisco Arts Weekly (June 1990); and slides depicting Southern historically Black colleges, historical Black figures including gay icons, and homo erotic love scenes that were projected during the theatrical production "Homos in the House" (1998).
