Summary
  • The collection depicts aspects of the personal life and professional activities of author and journalist Ellen Tarry, from the 1920s to the 1990s. Her early life is not depicted. The collection consists of portraits and candid shots of Tarry, her family and friends; group portraits of showing Tarry with family, friends and colleagues at various gatherings and events; candid shots and views of social gatherings, organizational meetings, literary events and readings, and her efforts with the Roman Catholic Church to have Pierre Toussaint canonized; candid shots of travels; and her administrative jobs with the United Service Organization (USO) and Friendship House.
  • Her personal life is documented by group portraits and candid shots depicting family members, including her mother, sister, and daughter; and friends, some pictured with Tarry, mostly at social gatherings. Included are publicity portraits of her friend, actress (later sociologist and journalist) Marguerite Cartwright, from the 1935 film "Green Pastures." Snapshots documenting Tarry's travels include an album of her visits to Europe (1970) and Africa (1971). Of note are a group of three-quarter length studio portraits of Tarry by taken by Carl Van Vechten.
  • Tarry's professional life mostly depicts her activities at public events, notably public speaking and receiving awards. An album documents her 1992 visit to Mobile, Alabama, where she was honored by Archbishop Oscar Lipcombe for the reprint of her 1955 book "The Third Door: The Autobiography of an American Negro Woman. " In New York City, Tarry is shown with Terence Cardinal Cook and John Cardinal O'Connor. Other photographs show Cardinal O'Connor blessing the former grave site of Venerable Pierre Toussaint at Old Patrick's Cathedral, and Tarry with several priests visiting the crypt under St. Patrick's Cathedral where Toussaint had been moved. Tarry is photographed speaking to a large gathering of children at the Hotel Theresa in Harlem, New York City, and in a library in Birmingham. She is also depicted with others at USO social events both in Harlem and Anniston, Alabama, ca. 1940s and 1950s.
  • Other notables depicted include Harlem librarian Regina Andrews, Edith Atshul Lehman, wife of Governor Lehman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Robert Kennedy, and poets John Clarke and Ricardo Weeks. Also included is a studio portrait of Father Augustine Tolton, the first Black Roman Catholic priest in the United States.

  • Ellen Tarry was an author, journalist, administrator and teacher who was known for her writings and activities pertaining to Blacks and the Catholic Church. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1906, she attended the Alabama State Normal School for Colored in Montgomery, Alabama, and taught public school from 1924 to 1926. In 1929, in pursuit of a writing career, she moved to New York City where she worked for Black newspapers. She was recruited by the USO in New York, which assigned her to its Anniston, Alabama location , and later to its base in Harlem, New York City. In 1955, she published "The Third Door: The Autobiography of an American Negro Woman," which was based on her experiences in race relations. Her other published works include children's books and "The Other Toussaint: A Post-Revolutionary Black" (1981), a biography of freed slave Pierre Toussaint, who helped raise funds to build Old St. Patrick's Cathedral in lower Manhattan. Tarry was involved in efforts to have him canonized. Among the accolades Tarry received were the Key to the City of Birmingham and "Media Woman of the Year" from the Metropolitan New York Chapter of the National Association of Media Women. She died in 2008 in New York city, at the age of 101.
