Summary
  • Depictions of residents, students, foreign visitors, religious structures and historical sites in Ethiopia in 1992, related to the history of the Aksumite Kingdom and the Ethiopian Orthodox religion in the city of Axum, Tigray Province, and the participation of the Rastafari community in the centennial celebration of the birth of Emperor Haile Selassie.
  • Collection consists of candid shots of Christian women and children in Axum; candid shots and views of Rastafari residents of Shashamane, Oromia, and Rastafari travelers from England and Jamaica; views of Rastafari celebrants and university students during centennial celebrations in the capital Addis Ababa; views of Ethiopian Orthodox religious structures, including the original and modern churches of Our Lady Mary of Zion, Axum, and the Maryam Church, built on Mount Entoto by Menelik II; views in Axum of ancient obelisks (stelas) and the site of the palace of the Queen of Sheba; and views of Aksumite artifacts and Selassie's 1930 ceremonial umbrella. Photographer Modupe Olufunmi is depicted posing in front of an obelisk.
