- Summary
- The African Burial Ground Monument memorializes the final resting place of enslaved and free Africans in 17th and 18th century colonial New York City, which had been forgotten and developed over by succeding generations of city officials. The site was discovered in 1991 during an archeological survey for the construction of a federal office building in Downtown Manhattan. 419 African bodies were discovered, prompting community protests calling for the landmark status of the burial ground, which was granted in 1993. In 2006, it was designated a national monument by the federal government.
