  • "These quartets for four viols are copied from Locke's autograph score, in a volume (now at the British Museum [Add. 17801, ff. 48-61b]) which the composer is said to have presented to King Charles II in 1672. Their date may, therefore, be said to be at least ten years earlier than that of the Purcell Fantasias. They are among the earliest four-movement string quartets that we have."
