Summary

Sofía Táboas: Gama térmica and Colección Jumex: Temperatura ambiente are two exhibitions with shared concerns. Gama térmica addresses Sofía Táboas (México, 1968) individual practice, while Temperatura ambiente is the artistœs curatorial reading of works from the Colección Jumex. As the titles of each show suggest, temperature is a shared leitmotif, put forward in poetic and aesthetic, as much as physical terms.Táboas frequently refers to the effects of heat and cold in her works. Materials and structures that react or protect from the elements are employed for their associative as well as physical properties. Color and light, or suggestions of fire, water and movements of air provoke phantasmagorical sensations beyond the visible. Temperature acts at the thresholds between bodies and environments, interior and exterior spaces, and states of being, signalling Táboas's key concerns. How such sensations condition and inform how we relate to each other, and our environment have been constant points of enquiry as to how to balance needs of the self with responsibilities towards othershuman or otherwise.
