Summary
The souvenir pamphlet for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, also known as the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, was published to showcase the African American community in St. Louis, Missouri. The pamphlet consists of portraits of prominent African American men, consisting of physicians; dentists; public school principals; the officers of the St. Louis Clerk's Literary Association, an organization of city clerks and carriers; and various "distinguished citizens" including attorneys, journalists and businessmen. Also depicted are exterior views of residences, public halls and institutions, business establishments, churches, and public schools, as well as exterior and interior views of the photography studio of Sexton and Maxwell.

  • Items are photomechanical reproductions of photographic illustrations, accompanied by printed captions, on leaves detached from a pamphlet. Leaves are single-sided with the exception of the first leaf which bears a preface and a dedication. The title page of pamphlet is missing. Most of the pages are made up of composite photographs.
