"The 2019 general elections marked a watershed in Nigeria's democratic consolidation trajectory. Not only were they the country's fifth successful consecutive elections, surpassing Huntington's two-consecutive elections 'rule' of democratic breakthrough, they were the first after the unprecedented alternation of power that saw the defeat of the ruling People's Democratic Party and incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan by the All Progressives Congress in 2014. The 2019 elections therefore, was a litmus test of Nigeria's democratic and electoral progression.
