Summary
The sculptural works published in this Hermitage exhibition catalogue, both reliefs and statues, were made by artists in Florence from the late 1300s to the early 1500s; most date to the fifteenth century. Artists worked with terracotta, stucco, and majolica. Many works were painted. Illustrations show each work as a whole and details reveal the nuances of the artist's talent or technique. Twenty-six of the works come from the Hermitage collection, and two were brought from San Gennaro (near Lucca Italy) for the exhibition. The introduction traces the provenance of many works to private Russian collections from the nineteenth century to the present.
