Katherine Mary Dunham (1909-2006) was an African-American dancer, choreographer, author, educator, anthropologist, and social activist. Alvin Ailey (1931-1989), was an African-American dancer, director, choreographer, and activist who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT).
