- 2021 is commemorated that 600 years ago a severe flood created the conditions in which the Biesbosch could arise. In the night of November 18 to 19, 1421, the Sint-Elisabeth flood broke through the dikes of the Groote Waard, after which this large polder between Dordrecht and Geertruidenberg turned into an inland sea. All that water and this special landscape has attracted many artists over the centuries. Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) from Dordrecht was the first to venture outside the city and allow himself to be penetrated by its picturesque surroundings. In the 19th and 20th centuries, artists shifted their gaze from ice skaters, ships and the ruins on the banks of the Merwerde to nature. This is evidenced by works by Marinus Reus (1865-1938), Elias Boonen (1860-1931), Bernard Koldeweij (1859-1898), Cor Noltee (1903-1967), Thomas van Heck (1910-2006) and Steef Wijnhoven ( 1898-1969). One of the roughest nature reserves in the Netherlands also attracts a new generation of artists, such as painters Sjane de Haan (1954) and Rutger van Bruggen (1987). The book 'The painters of the Biesbosch' is a new part in the successful series about artist colonies in the Netherlands. In contrast to the colonies that arose in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th century, the Biesbosch is a place where the artist was left to his own devices. In that sense, there has never been an artist colony. Every artist has wanted to capture the beauty of the unique wilderness in his own way. The unique landscape has brought them together. - In 2021 is herdacht dat 600 jaar geleden een hevige overstroming de omstandigheden schiep waarin de Biesbosch kon ontstaan. In de nacht van 18 op 19 november 1421 brak de Sint-Elisabethsvloed door de dijken van de Groote Waard, waarna deze grote polder tussen Dordrecht en Geertruidenberg in een binnenzee veranderde. Al dat water en dit bijzondere landschap heeft door de eeuwen heen vele kunstenaars aangetrokken. Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) uit Dordrecht was de eerste die zich buiten de stad waagde en zich liet doordringen van zijn schilderachtige omgeving. In de 19e en 20e eeuw verlegden kunstenaars hun blik van schaatsenrijders, schepen en de ruïne aan de oever van de Merwerde, naar de natuur. Daarvan getuigen werken van onder meer Marinus Reus (1865-1938), Elias Boonen (1860-1931), Bernard Koldeweij (1859-1898), Cor Noltee (1903-1967), Thomas van Heck (1910-2006) en Steef Wijnhoven (1898-1969). Een van de ruigste natuurgebieden van Nederland oefent ook aantrekkingskracht uit op een nieuwe generatie kunstenaars, zoals schilders Sjane de Haan (1954) en Rutger van Bruggen (1987). Het boek 'De schilders van de Biesbosch' is een nieuw deel in de succesvolle reeks over kunstenaarskolonies in Nederland. In tegenstelling tot de kolonies die in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw in Nederland ontstonden is de Biesbosch echter een plek waar de kunstenaar op zichzelf was aangewezen. In die zin is er nooit sprake geweest van een kunstenaarskolonie. Iedere kunstenaar heeft op een eigen manier de schoonheid van de unieke wildernis willen vastleggen.
