- Summary
- The so-called "French group" was a group of like-minded Latvian intelligentsia, united in the late 1940s by their love for France and French culture. Painter, watercolourist, scenographer, writer, organizer of books, exhibitions and expositions Kurt Friedrichsson (1911-1991) was one of the inspirers and initiators of the "French group". In January 1951, members of the group Kurt Fridrihsson, Elsa Stērsti, Ieva Las, Maija Silmali, Mirdza Ersa, Milda Grīnfeld, Miervalda Ozoliņa, Irīna and Arnold Stubaus, Alfreda and Eleonora Sausnes and Skaidrīti Sirsoni were accused of reading French literature and being interested in Western culture, tried for treason and sentenced to 7-25 years in Siberian camps.
