Summary

• Cairo - Based on the archival material left behind by the Danish painter and visual artist Niels Nedergaard (1944-1987), a selection of photos taken by the artist himself while he lived in the Egyptian capital from 1979-1986 is presented here for the first time. They are shown together with examples of Nedergaard's contemporary paintings, which are inspired by Islamic architecture and ornamentation. Up until his stay in Cairo, he had worked with the basic color compositions and large compositions of light and space. With this in mind, Nedergaard created a new idiom based on Cairo's patterns. This richly illustrated book also contains texts in Danish and English by art historian Johan Zimsen Kristiansen, professor Jakob Skovgaard Petersen, film director May el-Toukhy and museum inspector Peter Wandel. • Cairo - Med afsæt i den danske maler og billedkunstner Niels Nedergaards (1944-1987) efterladte arkivmateriale præsenteres her for første gang et udvalg af fotos taget af kunstneren selv, mens han boede i den egyptiske hovedstad fra 1979-1986. De vises sammen med eksempler på Nedergaards samtidige malerier, som er inspirerede af den islamiske arkitektur og ornamentik. Op til sit ophold i Cairo havde han arbejdet med grundfarvernes sammensætninger og store kompositioner af lys og rum. Med dette i bagagen skabte Nedergaard et nyt formsprog med udgangspunkt i Cairos mønstre. Denne rigt illustrerede bog indeholder desuden tekster på dansk og engelsk af kunsthistoriker Johan Zimsen Kristiansen, professor Jakob Skovgaard Petersen, filminstruktør May el-Toukhy og museumsinspektør Peter Wandel.
