- Summary
- Although Rahsaan Roland Kirk and John Cage do not meet in this film, Cage's sometimes enigmatic questions regarding sound are intercut with some of Kirk's ambitious experiments with it. The two musical mavericks share a similar vision of the limitless possibilities of music. At Ronnie Scott's Club, Kirk plays three saxes at once, switches to flute, incorporates tapes of birds, and distributes whistles to his audience encouraging them to accompany him "in the key of w if you please." Rahsaan embarks on a research trip to the London Zoo where he plays duets with various inmates and expands his Pied Piper activities to include children in Hyde Park. Cage is followed as he prepares a work for musical bicycle with David Tudor and Merce Cunningham at the Saville Theatre in London. Cage wanders the city, from traffic jam to playground, and reflects on questions like "Is a sound a blessing?". Cage encounters Kirk's music in an echo chamber and concludes his search for silence in his favorite spot, the anechoic chamber.
