- Summary
- The Impressionists were the first to grant children a special status, independent of the commissioned portrait which had until then been the only vehicle for representing them. In turn, in the late nineteenth century, the Nabis put children at the heart of their pictorial mechanism, which oscillated between private and public spheres, paving the way for a new space of creative freedom. This complex world lies at the crossroads of family, play, gardens, the street, music, illustration and photography, all subjects that inspired them for extended periods. The exhibition gives prominence to the works of Bonnard, Vuillard, Vallotton and Denis, without forgetting Lacombe, all of whom played a key role in developing a new image of childhood. Also represented, on the fringe of the Nabis movement, are sensitive works by Delâtre, Evenepoel, Maillol, Müller and Lemmen. With essays by Isabelle Cahn, Paul Denis, Dominique de Font-Réaulx, Emmanuel Pernoud, Sylvie Patry and Véronique Serrano, this catalogue offers a comprehensive and scholarly perspective on the subject. Exhibition: Musée Bonnard, Le Cannet, France (02.07. - 06.11.2022).
