- In the early days of this century, the Rio de Janeiro publisher Casa 21 invited some of the leading Western comic artists to visit a Brazilian city and write a book about it. Marcello Quintanilha was left with the city of Salvador and the result is this daring book, which organically mixes image and text, but is not what has been conventionally called a comic book. It is a multidimensional representation that shows the fort, the slopes, the sound of the berimbau, the dance on the sidewalk, the sunlight on the cobblestones, the loudspeaker in the Kombi that sells fruit, the slide in the market aisle, the laughter, the conversations, fights, confessions... Salvador is an exciting portrait of the life of a city. That trip to Salvador inspired other comics by Quintanilha, including the acclaimed Tungstenio, winner of an Angoulême. But Salvador, the book, remains as the broadest portrait that Quintanilha painted of the effervescent life of Salvador. A cult book, which now arrives in a new expanded edition, with a photo gallery, sketches and a new text by Quintanilha.--
