- "These poems were translated by Herbert Marshall in 1985, from the music of the Suite for Contralto & Piano. They were typeset at Monoset Typesetters Ltd in 10pt. Cyrillic Plantin and small capitals and printed at the Royal College of Art with the assistance of Mick Perry in an edition of fifty numbered copies. Shostakovich set these six poems to music in 1973, just two years before his death. Herbert Marshall (b. 1906) is renowned for his work as the translator of Vladimir Mayakovsky. His work in this field is without equal. He was commisioned by Shostakovich himself to provide translations into Russian for the composer's Fourteenth Symphony" -- colophon.
