- "Robert Fludd's 'Creation' comes about through, first the general impression we had of the engravings in his remarkable two-volume work and then through permission from The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, California to reproduce the nineteen plates that this new volume contains. Thanks are also due the Harold E. Berg Endowment for the funds essential to the early phases of the project. We are struck by the fact that the good Dr. Fludd resolved most issues for himeself and his readers by visual means and so this book is intended as a tribute not only to Fludd but also to his two engravers, Johann Theodor de Bry and Matthias Merian the Elder. The graphic image here is a power in its own right, generating light and dark within itself, not through illusion or any other suggestions from without. The Bancroft's excellent photographic department made the prints from which our negatives were in turn produced for us by David Curnutt. Emily Rogers used the negatives to etch the printing plates using our Polimero Platemanker, and they were then printed on a Vandercook Universal II. The paper is Johannot and the type is both Weiss foundry and Adobe's version of the original cutting. Shanan Miller, with early support from Joan Stone, assisted in all the presswork. Tom Leech has made the excellent marbled endpapers and the binding is designed and executed by Karen Pardue at the Avis Bindery" -- colophon.
