- Summary
- Part angel investor, part entrepreneur, part technologist, Harry Guggenheim launched businesses whose impact on 20th century America went far beyond the Guggenheims' mines or museum. Smillie's biography reveals the fascinating life of this American icon.
- It took three generations of Guggenheims to build their wealth-- yet it was the singular force of Harry Guggenheim who would guide the family's next generation of businesses into modernity. He sponsored Robert H. Goddard's private research into liquid fuel rocketry and space flight; was the United States ambassador to Cuba from 1929 until 1933; a major thoroughbred racehorse owner and breeder; and was one of the co-founders of the newspaper Newsday, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1954. This is only a partial list of his interests. Smillie reveals the fascinating life of this American icon. -- adapted from jacket and perusal of text
