- Summary
- Rejected in much of the world as a symbol of poverty or cultural backwardness, since the early 1970's earthen constructions have begun to be considered a valuable cultural heritage to be rescued and preserved. For this, a great paradigm shift was necessary to understand that the cultural and architectural heritage is not only that made up of large monumental buildings, symbols of status and power, but also by small urban and rural housing complexes, erected by anonymous builders. that gave identity to local territories around the globe and that, in the face of cultural homogenization promoted by 20th-century architecture and industrialized materials, still have much to contribute. In Chile, the incipient process of recognition of the cultural values ??of this built heritage, together with the damage it has suffered due to earthquakes, has increased interest in preserving earthen constructions in the different territories, since it has been understood that Along with their disappearance, a good part of the identity and local history of many places has been lost. Even so, much of this heritage remains anonymous, stigmatized and the subject of many myths about its structural behavior. This book aims to contribute to this enhancement of heritage on land and earthen construction. Through five chapters that rescue its history, the different earthen techniques and construction cultures, it gives an account of the damage caused by earthquakes -revealing its true causes- and culminates by highlighting the importance of people, thanks to whom the craft of building with earth is still alive.
