"Edmund Campion: Jesuit and Martyr in the reign of Queen Elizabeth marked a decisive turning-point for Evelyn Waugh, and gave new direction to his writing. It is also a book which Waugh changed as it went through five editions from 1935 to 1961. These changes were not minor revisions; they reflect his developing perception of Campion's significance. He came gradually to see that what he had conceived as a combative piece of Elizabethan history was, like Brideshead Revisited (1945), a tribute both to the triumph of grace over individual human weakness, and to the eschatological triumph of the global church over the secular state in 'an unending war'"--
