- Summary
- "Pippin of Italy was the son of Charlemagne, who became the Lombai ds' boy king in 781. For almost thirty years he ruled a vast reign, extending from the Lombard core land into the former Roman provinces of Italy, reaching across the Alps to the Upper Danube, and ranging far into Southeastern Europe. During his whole life, Pippin reigned under Charlemagne's shadow. His death in 810 left a sorrowful father and signed the breakup of his large kingdom. h is because of his reign's sudden disappearance, that Pippin's figure, together with his political agency, have been often overlooked, making him a neglected Carolingian. This volume, entirely dedicated to king Pippin and his reign, aims to assess his achievement and legacy. The collected articles explore aspects of his biography, accompanied by the study of his reign's institutions and culture, together with the relationShips with neighboiing polities. The numerous contributions, together with the diverse language of their composition (English, French, Italian andreflect the broad and vast interest, as well as possible approaches to the topic. They constitute a point of entry to Pippin's vibrant years; they offer a vast fresco of a political project, whose eventual failure dœs not undermine its greatness."--Page 4 of cover.
