- Summary
- The exhibition The Horseman in the MAPA Collection (Museo de Arte Popular Americano Tomás Lago) proposes to look again at these processes of transculturation or creation of cultural guidelines expressed in the material productions linked to the horseman in Chile. The riding implement has developed its own physiognomy in the territory, aided by heterogeneous cultural influences. An example of this is the influence of the Jesuit Bavarian Baroque on the production of wooden stirrups, which retain their appearance to this day. Through the MAPA collection you can appreciate the local transformations in the harness and other elements associated with riding. At the same time, this collection contains examples of Mapuche workmanship that are not only based on technical development, but also reveal social, civil and ceremonial elements, materialized in the art of the rütrafe (silversmith) and düwekafe (weaver). The exhibition exhibits a journey through different moments of this narrative, from wooden stirrups and spurs dating from the 18th century to recent examples; together with other objects associated with the implement such as bridles, whips and saddlebags.
