Summary

An undated early 19th century French parlor game consisting of sets of 2 cards, one with the printed proverb and explanatory text, the other a hand-colored engraving illustrating the corresponding tableaux for one team of players to enact and the other team to guess. This copy of the game is missing at least one card (the text card for final proverb). Several of the illustrations contain depictions that are racist, anti-Black, and misogynistic.

• "Les Proverbes choisis et representes par tableaux, offrent chacun un but moral et sont très-faciles à mettre en scène, d'autant plus que l'on peut se costumer à sa guise, ajouter quelques accessoires, ou diminuer le Tableau à volonté. Pour s' amuser à ce jeu, il est d'usage que la société se divise en 2 parties égales, l'une pour mettre le proverbe en actions, et l, autre pour le deviner ou donner un gage par chaque personne, si celle-ci renence, et dancs ce cas, la partie qui est en scène continue à jouer, jusqú à ce que la partie adverse ait deviné." -- instruction card.
