[Introductory remarks by Marian Horosko, host of the WBAI, New York radio program Profiles, including identification of the location as the restaurant, The Russian Tea Room.] Merce Cunningham speaks with Horosko about his work including the fact that almost all of his dances are set and devised and are not improvisations; his views on whether dance can be abstract; his collaborations with Robert Rauschenberg and John Cage as arising out of his interest in contemporary music and contemporary art and stage design; other composers whose music he has used; his transition from performing as a soloist with Martha Graham's company to having his own company [Merce Cunningham Dance Company]; his thoughts on the changing contemporary dance scene in the United States; his reluctance to apply [rigid] categories to dance types; his focus on the use of movement of whatever kind and on how contemporary art of all kinds reflects the world around us; the company's upcoming tours. [Interview with Cunningham ends at approximately 12:25; Horosko introduces the next guest, artist Raphael Soyer.] Raphael Soyer speaks with Horosko about his art, including how he characterizes himself: "a representational artist of our time"; his reason for disliking the word "modern" when describing art; reason he likes to paint pictures of people; his views of various museums (mainly in New York City) in particular, the new modern art museum at 59th Street and Columbus Circle [Huntington Hartford Gallery of Modern Art, in the building now housing the Museum of Arts and Design]. [Interview with Raphael Soyer ends at approximately 20:47. Horosko introduces Martin Gordon, the director of the Galerie des Nus,] Martin Gordon speaks with Horosko about the Galerie des Nus, the current exhibition, and his reasons for establishing the gallery in Greenwich Village.
