Summary
The artist Gego studied architecture and engineering at the TH Stuttgart (Institute of Technology) from 1932 to 1938, before she was forced to emigrate to Venezuela because of her Jewish roots. In 1956, when she began working as an artist, she wrote to her former professor Paul Bonatz: "Even though I may have been lost to architecture and was unable to master life through it, it has shaped me, certainly to some extent. Even unhappy loves are of great value and have their effect." A few years later, MoMA in New York purchased its first piece by the artist. Today, Gego is one of the best-known artists in Latin America. Conceptual as well as practical considerations of architecture and space-forming processes have always remained at the heart of her artistic exploration. Her method of design has been influenced, above all, by material, technical, aesthetic, and urbanistic questions. This book is published in conjunction with the exhibit Gego. The Architecture of an Artist, which presents a permanent loan of 100 works from the Fundación Gego at the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart with a special focus on the artist's graphic work. -- Cover.
