- Summary
- "The text of Half-Century considers the complexity of our relationship to time in our daily lives. We think we understand how time works, but our public beliefs about time may not sync up with our private beliefs about time. Our conception of time changes over the course of a lifetime but we often only realize this at milestones and/or traumatic moments in our lives. Imagery includes a variety of large wood type numbers that were printed at the Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, WI, along with an abstract visual timeline illustrating a pattern of significant life events over a 50-year period"--Artist's statement, Vamp & Tramp Booksellers' website, September 27, 2022.

- "Half-Century was written, illustrated and designed by Julie Chen ... Thanks also to Kathryn Leonard for providing information for the abstract visual timeline that is embedded in this book. Half-Century is dedicated to Sandra Kroupa, Book Arts & Rare Books Curator, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of her career at University of Washington Libraries, Seattle, WA"--Colophon.
- Each page, symbolizing one year in Sandra Kroupa's career at the University of Washington Libraries, is printed with large wood-type numerals from 1 to 50 in turquoise ink with text over-printed in black ink. Most pages are illustrated with symbols representing the visual timeline. A sheet of mottled gray paper attached to the bottom tray of the case is lifted by a paper tab to reveal a sheet of explanations for the symbols used on the pages.
- Bound as a double-sided accordion with first and last leaves attached to upper and lower boards that are covered in red silk. Mottled gray paper title labels printed in turquoise (Act I) and dark red (Act II) inlaid on upper and lower boards, respectively. Housed in a red and apricot silk-covered, drop-spine case, lined with mottled gray paper, decorated with wheel/sun motif printed in copper-colored ink; motif repeated on mottled gray paper label affixed to upper surface of case; magnetic closure at the fore-edge.
