Summary
This publication, accompanying the first exhibition held in the Gallery of Prints and Drawings of the State Hermitage Museum, is devoted to the interconnection between the two forms of graphic arts. The materials presented are masterpieces of the Hermitage collection - works by Dürer, Parmigianino, Goltzius, Bellange, Rembrandt, Rubens, Tiepolo, Goya and others. The comparison of artworks created by different artists in different techniques reveals the distinguishing characteristics of each form of art. Preparatory drawings, from life studies to finished sketches, make it possible to trace all stages of work on the composition of a print. The reproductive prints brilliantly rendering all the specific features of drawings, as also do sketches in the manner of engraving, demonstrate the mutual influence of the two forms of graphic arts on each other.
