"In this book, the authors offer a clear example of frontier studies under which different specialties of the humanities, geography and earth sciences are linked, with the aim of carrying out a detailed study on the peoples that belong to the western part of the state of Oaxaca. They highlight that a good part of the work consists of extensive and detailed cartography on various geographical features that characterize the Mixteca Alta, because until now, no studies had been prepared that more precisely established the environmental characteristics of the region. Thus, this important cartographic work addresses two aspects of extreme urgency: the sociodemographic and the geoenvironmental. They recognize that through the efforts of a multidisciplinary group made up of historians and geographers (CIESAS, UNAM): geographers, geomorphologists and biologists (Institute of Geography, UNAM) and archaeologists (ENAH) it was possible to structure this work where the aspects of the environment come together. natural environment and risk factors or natural disasters that affect human settlements. They highlight how, through arduous field work, documentary research and based on statistical data, maps were created that illustrate the economic activities of the region and show data on vulnerability and levels of marginalization. Regarding the geoenvironmental element, they assure that this is reflected in detailed maps on topography, physiography, basins, hypsometry, geology, geomorphology, land use, vegetation, climates, morpholineations, tectonics and other specialized information about the Mixteca Alta. They highlight that the book provides a historical, archaeological and geographical analysis of a group of maps prepared in the 16th century where data and location of sites are contrasted through modern geographic information systems. Finally, they consider that the research results, shaped by geography and history, are truly complementary and the prelude to the consolidation of a real frontier science that helps eliminate barriers to place them in a multidisciplinary perspective."--
