Summary
"Socialization in the early modern period took place essentially through the arrangement and semiotic charging of human bodies. The focus of the last conference of the Wolfenbuttel Baroque Working Group was on body practices across the entire spectrum, from more instrumental body techniques to symbolic, performative rituals and productions. This brought into focus questions about the historicity of physical practices, about the tension between normativity and everyday actions, about the interplay between the apparent statics of rituals and social dynamics, about the contrast between stabilization and legitimation of social order as well as the possibilities of ironization and subversion . The contributions to the volume that emerged from the conference document an interdisciplinary view of relevant aspects of the body in the Baroque era and can be divided into four content sections: body practices in the fields of religion and magic, body practices in the fields of law and politics, body practices in Narratives and visualizations as well as body practices in the areas of staged performance and the stage. The Body of the Early Modern Period is the final volume in the Wolfenbuttel series of works on baroque research."--Publisher's description.
