Summary
"Mariss Jansons, chief conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, commissioned six contemporary composers to each write a work lasting approximately ten minutes, the requirement being that it should refer to a particular symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven in terms of its form, its concept or the material used. (In two cases, there are two reference works, the Fourth Symphony was left out). These short orchestral pieces were intended as an introductory gesture, or as a modern afterthought on the performance of the relevant symphonies in the concert hall."--Program notes.
