Summary

After fighting the French, Van returns to his North Vietnamese hometown. Most men have either fought and/or died in the previous war or are being drafted to fight the Americans in the upcoming war. The women of the town are left without husbands or prospects of future husbands or children and this is the focus of this film. Van is torn between a relationship with Hanh, that causes rifts within the village and with the landowner Hon, which is unacceptable under the Communist regime.
