Summary
Allan Kaprow (1927-2006) founded the art form of the happening at the end of the 1950s. His environments are considered as milestones in recent art history. However, he began his artistic career as a painter. This publication focuses for the first time on the paintings created between 1946 and 1957. The pictorial spaces are burst open. In the rhythmically charged works, particularly in the action collages, the canvas becomes a combat zone. In hindsight, it seems clear that the happenings and environments were only a step away...
