- Summary
- The 1970s have become one of the turbulent periods of Turkey. The military memorandum of March 12, 1971, reminiscent of this period, secretly sneaked into Syria to learn the revolutionary leftist militants imagining to carry out a popular revolution; bank robberies; the armed conflicts of revolutionary left and idealist militants; the death of young people from both sides; the execution of young people; and the going to the Palestinian camps and back to Turkey to descend the country into tragedy. One of the most important actions of this turbulent period was the abduction of Israeli Consul General Ephraim Elrom on May 17, 1971 by THKP-C leader Mahir Çayan and his friends. Çayan and his colleagues demanded the release of revolutionary militants who were in prison for the release of Elrom. The government rejected this request and arrested all the left-wing intellectuals of the period with the Sledgehammer Operation. With the Sledgehammer Operation and the curfew announced afterwards, the search in Istanbul hastened the execution of Elrom. Elrom's body was found in an apartment building in Nişantaşı on Sunday, May 23, 1971. This study examines this phenomenon, which took place during seven days in May 1971, by all fronts.
