Summary

Zonaro was brought to Istanbul by Sultan Abdülhamid in 1891, became chief painter of the Yildiz Palace in 1896 and stayed at this post for 14 years. In these years of his artistic career, he created many works, opened exhibitions and gave painting courses. He took part in the commission of the weapons museum founded by the Sultan, and depicted the Ottoman soldiers, presenting them in an album--the "Ottoman Soldiers Album"--which contains 27 different watercolor images, and is published for the first time in this book. The book features Zonaro's artistic life, his forced to return to Italy after Abdulhamid's dethronement, his nineteen years with his family in Istanbul, the unknowns about his last years here, and the frustrations he experienced after returning to Italy. The book contains archival documents, which have not been published to date, and also sheds light on the approach of the administrative staff of the period to artisans and artists.
