Summary
Dobrá Voda is one of the most important stone-cutting centers in western Slovakia. Dobrovodské stoneworkers made her famous for her art in the Middle Ages. The stonework tradition was developed here by Italian masters who lived and worked at Dobrá Voda since the construction of the Dobrovod Castle. Probably during the construction of the Dobrovod Castle, stone masons discovered a new type of stone, which, unlike the Triassic limestone, formed large blocks, had better physico-mechanical properties and was well machined. These qualities and good natural conditions for mining have enabled it to be used on sacred and secular buildings in the wider area. And so since the early Middle Ages, carbonate sandstones and conglomerates from the Dobrovodska basin have been known as a stone well-machined and suitable for building, sculptural and decorative purposes.--From publisher's website.
