Summary

Dertig procent van alle bomen staat in de boreale zone, een cirkel van voornamelijk naaldbomen die zich uitstrekt over Europa, Azië en Noord-Amerika. Deze boreale bossen, ook wel taiga genoemd, zetten op grote schaal koolstofdioxide om in zuurstof. Een gemiddelde boom produceert in honderd jaar genoeg zuurstof om een persoon twintig jaar van te laten ademen. En toch is minder dan twaalf procent van deze bossen beschermd gebied. Voor 'Borealis' trokken fotograaf Jeroen Toirkens en journalist Jelle Brandt Corstius van 2016 tot en met 2020 naar die bossen en gingen op zoek naar de verhalen van de mensen die er wonen. Het werden 8 heel verschillende reizen, naar Noorwegen, Schotland, Canada, Japan, Alaska en Rusland.
