- Summary
- "The two doughters of Manuel Garcia and Joaquina Stichès, Maria Malibran and Pauline Viardot are the most famous sisters in the history of opera. In their time they were both labelled mezzo-sopranos, but with careful study their voices were able to encompass many parts suns as a general rule by sopranos. Marilyn Horne has recorded a selection from their widely varying roles. This is a feat probably unique today, nevertheless proving that an exceptional artist can still revive an era thout, until recently, to have been abandoned to the past. The sisters di not appear together (Maria died when Pauline was only fifteen), but their repertoires contained many roles in common. Maria can fairly be described as a great singer of the earlier part of the nineteenth centure, but Pauline lived through and took part in the great transformation from Rossini to Meyebeer, Verdi and Gounod. This recording sets out not only to present a virtuoso feat of the present day, but also to be an important historical document."--Program notes.
