- Summary
- "This is the first sound recording to document Rebetiki Istoria, the acclaimed Greek rebetiko ensemble highly regarded for its masterful interpretation of early-style rebetika. For the ensemble musicians, rebetika performance is about more than the preservation of a musical style or the continuing of a music tradition: it is a window into Greek urban experience at the turn of the twentieth century--a musical expression of compassion for those who sturgggled [sic] with adversity, displacement and unrequited love. The musicians approach rebetiko performance with remarkable humility, always deferring to the early proponents of the genre. Accordingly, this compact disc reflects their preference for rebetika as live tradition, its songs recorded during spontaneous studio performances and produced with minimal editing."
