Summary
  • Islamization in Turkey did not take place with mass demands "from the bottom up" as is often claimed. On the contrary, the army was organized "from top to bottom" by alliances led by capital and the USA, and injected into the masses as an antidote to the left. This study opposes the paradigm that reads the 90-year Republican period through the uninterrupted Kemalist-Islamist antagonism and describes Islamism as a political actor representing the periphery against the center and civil society against the state. Islamism in Turkey is not a political movement that represents the circle that was oppressed, victimized and oppressed by the center during the Cold War, but is a dynamic backed by the center, big capital and the army against the worker and student movements that emerged from class politics since the 1960s
