Summary
The volume that closes the series started in 1972 by Justino Fernandez is dedicated to the last four years of the Academia de San Carlos (1781-1919), comprising a catalogue of the documents recorded during a period of turmoil and instability due to the revolutionary struggle in which Mexico City was occupied by rival troops and changed command several times. These historic events had repercussions on the Academy: constant changes in the direction of the school, uncertainty in the permanence of the teaching staff and risk of its valuable artistic heritage. The Academy of San Carlos was founded in 1781 during a period in which the neoclassical current prevailed in art and one of whose main objectives was to establish the classical principles considered of "good taste", putting a sudden end to the exuberance reached with the ultra-baroque. The Academy was the first major art academy and the first art museum in the Americas. It was founded in 1781 as the School of Engraving.
