- Summary
- The Fortieth Anniversary of the Ensemble was celebrated in February 1992 at the Eastman School of Music, with a series of concerts, conducting workshops, and scholarly papers, presented under the aegis of the American Sonneck Society.
- These papers are the foundation of this book and will be viewed as primary research into the areas of historical development of the wind band, repertoire analysis, and performance practices; in addition, international reports on wind band history and development in England, Europe and Japan are presented.
- Of immediate interest to conductors, composers, musicologists, and performers is the essay on the Wind Ensemble Concept with its underlying principles that have created this revolution in concert band activities over the past four decades. This history, as shown through the activities of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, is presented by Donald Hunsberger, the Ensemble's conductor since 1965.
- Complete repertoires (in program format) of the Eastman School Symphony Band (1935-1952) and the Eastman Wind Ensemble (1952-1992), catalogues of their performances by composer and title, and a full discography of the EWE are provided.
