- Summary
- A Brief History of Education in The Gambia explores the coming of Western Education to the shores of The Gambia soon after the founding of Bathurst (now Banjul) in 1816. We discover the coming of the different Christian missionaries and the establishment of the first schools. We will also learn about the evolution of the school system from the standard system to the present basic cycle and senior secondary system. The different education reports influenced the way education was conducted in the Country, especially with the hovering French involvement due to the geographical position of The Gambia vis-a-vis Senegal. Cherno will finally let us discover the challenges of the education policies and the government's response to education in general.
