Summary
Dreamworld is the first major solo exhibition (and the first in Europe) by artist Mit Jai Inn (b.1960, Chiang Mai). A leading figure of contemporary art in Thailand, the artist is known for his colourful artworks that merge painting and sculpture. His work is imbued with Buddhist philosophy, particularly the notion of Karma (actions in the world). The exhibition features recent and new works made for Ikon which embody his vision of art "as a utopian dream within everyday life". This publication includes full-colour documentation of the exhibition and recent work, alongside projects from the 1980s, when Mit was living in Vienna and working with Franz West. Features essays by Ikon Curator Melanie Pocock, art historian Simon Soon, and critic and curator Brian Curtin, as well as an interview with the artist by Gridthiya Gaweewong, Artistic Director, The Jim Thompson Art Center, Bangkok. "Throughout this show, Mit challenges notions of what painting, sculpture and, indeed, an exhibition might be. We are encouraged to move around his works, touch them, even inhabit them." David Trigg (Studio International) Exhibition: Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, UK (15.09. ? 21.11.2021) / MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Thailand (08.09.2022 ? 28.04.2023).
