• Air watchtowers from the Cold War provides a complete picture of the nationwide network of air watchtowers in which thousands of volunteers searched the skies for enemy Russian aircraft in all weathers between 1950 and 1968. A national network that fulfilled a task within the international air defense of Western Europe. Of the nearly 300 objects, 70 are still preserved: concrete towers, brick lookouts and command centers. The concrete honeycomb towers, designed by architect Marten Zwaagstra, are architectural witnesses of the Cold War. Their construction of prefab concrete is typical of the reconstruction in the fifties. The book also tells the story of the observers on the towers, of the many ordinary citizens, men and women, who were involved in the defense and protection of our country. The book does not stop at the decommissioning of the towers in 1968, but also describes the events that followed, from demolition to creative reuse. Personal anecdotes and eyewitness accounts bring the history of the remaining towers to life. The many historical and contemporary photos, construction drawings and maps form an extensive visual story. Finally, a catalog of all objects ever built with type and current condition is included. Historical geographer Sandra van Lochem spent years researching air watchtowers. She works as a heritage specialist at Natuurmonumenten and regularly publishes on Cold War subjects, country estates and landscape heritage
• Luchtwachttorens uit de Koude Oorlog geeft een compleet beeld van het landelijke netwerk van luchtwachttorens waarin tussen 1950 en 1968 duizenden vrijwilligers in weer en wind het luchtruim afzochten naar vijandelijke Russische vliegtuigen. Een nationaal netwerk dat een taak vervulde binnen de internationale luchtverdediging van West-Europa. Van de bijna 300 objecten zijn er nog 70 bewaard gebleven: betonnen torens, bakstenen uitkijkposten en commandocentra. De door architect Marten Zwaagstra ontworpen betonnen raatbouwtorens vormen architectonische getuigen van de Koude Oorlog. Hun constructie uit prefab beton is typerend voor de wederopbouw in de jaren vijftig. Het boek vertelt ook het verhaal van de waarnemers op de torens, van de vele gewone burgers, mannen én vrouwen, die bij de verdediging en bescherming van ons land betrokken waren. Het boek stopt niet bij de buitengebruikstelling van de torens in 1968, maar beschrijft ook de gebeurtenissen erna, van sloop tot creatief hergebruik. Persoonlijke anekdotes en verhalen van ooggetuigen brengen de historie van de resterende torens tot leven. De vele historische en hedendaagse foto's, bouwtekeningen en kaarten vormen een uitgebreid beeldverhaal. Tot slot is een catalogus van alle ooit gebouwde objecten met type en huidige staat opgenomen. Historisch geograaf Sandra van Lochem deed jarenlang onderzoek naar luchtwachttorens. Ze werkt als erfgoedspecialist bij Natuurmonumenten en publiceert regelmatig over Koude Oorlog-onderwerpen, buitenplaatsen en landschappelijk erfgoed
