Summary
The catalogue comprises around 300 works by Anna Maria Maiolino (Calabria, Italy, 1942, immigrated to Venezuela in 1954), who in 1960 moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she has lived and worked for most of the next forty-five years. In the 1970's Maiolino experimented with various mediums and modes of working, creating Super 8 films, installations, and performances as well as book objects and drawings. Curated by Paulo Miyada, this large individual exhibition covers all phases and supports of the artist's career and is the result of three years of research and many hours of conversation and exchange with the artist. Conceived as a spiral, it does not follow a linear chronology, but instead traverses in different directions the stages of her career and the varied media with which she worked, from the end of the 1970s to the present. It also recovers significant moments and events from Maiolino's "life-work", as she herself called her vital experience. Drawing on her experiences as an Italian-born immigrant in politically unstable Brazil, the multimedia artist explores themes of belonging, identity, desire, and the subjectivity of the self. Her practice includes drawing, performance, sculpture, video, and printmaking. Since the 1980s, she has primarily worked with malleable materials such as clay to make labor-intensive sculptures and installations that reference daily rituals and experiences. She also draws and paints. Includes a section dedicated to her Ações Matéricas (Matter Actions) series, (1996-2013)
