Summary

Zapotec poetry by Víctor Terán's collections. "Victor Teran is the preeminent living poet of the Isthmus Zapotec language of Southern Oaxaca, Mexico. His work has been translated and anthologized around the world. He's published six books of poetry, including an anthology featuring his translations into Isthmus Zapotec of 40 world poets. In David Shook's translation, his work has appeared in Poetry, World Literature Today, Modern Poetry in Translation, and Oxford Magazine, among many other magazines, as well as a Poetry Translation Centre chapbook. He's been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and featured on BBC4 and KCRW's Bookworm. in 2010 he toured the UK, setting records for chapbook sales for the Poetry Translation Centre. A series of recordings made at the BBC Studios are available online on the PC's website. Together with Shook, Teran edited Like a New Sun: New Indigenous Poetry trom Mexico (Phoneme Media, 2015), featuring contemporary poetry written in six of the Indigenous languages of Mexico. David Shook lives in Northern California. Translations of Indigenous Mexican poetry also include work from Zoque and Nahuati, which they studied in the village of San Agustin Oapan, in Guerrero. Together with Terán, Shook edited Like a New Sun: New Indigenous Poetry from Mexico (Phoneme Media, 2015), featuring contemporary poetry written in six of the Indigenous languages of Mexico.". The series Avión, named after Mexican estridentista Kyn Taniya's 1919 book by the same name, is a new project that seeks to promote the innovation and internationalism espoused by Mexico's historical avant-gardes, creating a transportation, a flight if you will, in between landwatches mostly from other languages into Spanish but also across inter-pollination of different emancipatory imaginariums, furies, directions and tongues.
