- Summary
- After coming to power in Egypt at around 1350 BCE, Pharaoh Akhenaten rejected the old gods and dictated a new religion. This new cult led to major social upheaval. Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti decided to found a new residence, a splendid new city which today is known as Amarna. In this publication, experts look at selected areas and important buildings in Amarna, from which the Glyptotek and the National Museum in Copenhagen once received finds from excavations. Overviews based on the finds as well as the lively wall decorations of temples and tombs also provide a background for understanding the Amarna Period in relation to Egyptian history and the present.
