Description
192 pages : illustrations, maps; 27 cm.
Summary
  • This volume brings together for the first time information on various wetland classification systems and wetland inventories from around the world. Regional, national and local wetland classifications developed in Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Europe, India, South America and the United States are outlined. These classifications have invariably been orientated towards the conservation and management of wetlands.
  • Existing national and regional classification systems have not only been useful, but they have provided an essential base for developing an international system. Classification is an essential prerequisite for wetland inventory. In fact, Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention undertake to compile an inventory as part of the process of developing and implementing a national wetland policy for the wise use of all wetlands on their territory. This volume also reviews various attempts to inventory wetlands in different parts of the world.
  • Techniques used in wetland inventories range from basic field and literature surveys to highly sophisticated efforts that use serial photography and satellite imagery. Inventories have been essential for assessing wetland losses and for assigning preservation and management priorities to remaining wetlands.
  • This volume will be of interest to anyone working in wetland ecology, but especially to those working on the classification, inventory, conservation, or management of wetlands at the local, national, regional, or international level.
